Zakat Al-Fitr

Is due on every Muslim, paid by the head of the household for each member of the family. It must be paid, and distributed, by Salat al Eid (Eid prayer).

Although Zakat Al-Fitr is originally an amount of food to be given to qualified recipients, people more commonly give the monetary equivalent, that may vary from one location to another, and from one year to the next. As best we could tell, it is $10/per person in the USA. Pleas double check with your local community.

Qualified Recipients

It has to be distributed to a very specific groups of individuals as follows:

  1. the poor (fukara)
  2. the needy (masakeen)
  3. collectors of Zakah (al almileen alyha)
  4. reconciliation of hearts
  5. freeing captives / slaves (fee al-Riqab),
  6. debtors,
  7. for a cause of God
  8. the traveler.
